If you’re a parent or someone who works with children, then it’s likely you’ve heard of the lovable blue Australian cattle dog, Bluey. For many reasons, Bluey has become a favorite in many households. Here’s what Hannah and Ruby, dynamic speech therapist duo behind Curated Communication, love about what Bluey can teach from a language and communication perspective:
Demonstrates ways parents can play with their children
Play is so important! Children primarily learn language and other valuable skills (planning, problem solving, practicing routines, expanding attention span, etc.) through play interactions. Even though play does not always come naturally to many adults, play strengthens the connection between concepts, their meaning, and the family unit.
Provides explanations in a way that children understand
Providing explanation teaches critical thinking skills, cause/effect, and introduces a variety of new language skills that may not otherwise arise. It also prepares children for transitions and new routines by allowing them to understand what is expected and alleviating anxiety and uncertainty.
Exemplifies self-advocacy skills and boundary-setting
Self-advocacy and boundary-setting is prominent throughout the show by expressing wants/needs, asking for help, and saying “no”. “No” is one of the most powerful words we can teach to instill boundaries for safety. These skills are reinforced by children and adults throughout each episode. Characters exemplify speaking up for themselves, honoring other’s needs, and respecting boundaries.
Encourages consistent community involvement
Participating in activities outside the home teaches new vocabulary relevant to environments that are not typically present in daily routines. Activities with others teach social skills such as conversation skills, humor, gaining attention, and asking/answering questions.
Discusses emotions and concerns candidly
Social-emotional development and emotional regulation is essential to forming and sustaining positive relationships. Bluey models how to express feelings with guided support from adults, even when it may be difficult to identify. For adults, Bluey exemplifies how to first connect, then listen to concerns and work together to find a solution. This safely allows one to understand what emotions they're feeling, then appropriately respond, communicate their needs, and problem solve.
Teaches collaborative problem solving skills
Dr. Ross Greene stated “Kids do well if they can”. When it comes to challenging behaviors and problematic situations, children do not lack the will to behave, they lack the skills. Bluey demonstrates how adults can effectively partner with a child to identify triggers of a behavior or problem, teach the skills to address it, and collaborate on a solution that satisfies all parties.
Guides children to experience natural consequences
Natural consequences are what organically occurs in response to a child’s action. This is effective because it helps children understand the impact of their actions and naturally motivates them to have control over their own behaviors. Some examples from the show: “It would be easier to play if the toys were picked up”, turning the fan on causing the balloon to fly away, arguing over ice cream for so long that it melts.
Shows diverse characters with varying skills and abilities
Diversity encourages acceptance, and provides reassurance that child development ranges between children. Adults honor diversity and provide accommodations and support in order for the child to reach their full capabilities. Despite individual differences, Bluey strengthens the belief that all children are capable, given appropriate support.
It is important to acknowledge that these valuable skills are not instilled simply from watching them modeled. Children and adults benefit from regular practice to be able to apply them in daily interactions. Try recreating these skills in playful scenarios! Bluey has a gentle way of showing great abilities in easy 9 minute bite-sized episodes. The inventive characters, wackadoo world, and of course that loveable Australian accent makes this show a one-of-a-kind language and communication adventure!
